Transport in the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida: how to get around the Mediterranean easily and comfortably

Living or spending long periods on the Costa Blanca or the Costa Cálida doesn’t just mean enjoying the sun and the sea — it also means moving around freely in a charming and well-connected environment. Whether you live here all year round or own a second home, knowing your transport options will help you make the most of every day.

Your Own Car or Rental Car: the Most Practical Option

Without a doubt, having a car is the most convenient way to get around towns and beaches. The road network in both areas is excellent, offering fast connections between all major locations.

Main motorways and roads:

  • The AP-7 (Mediterranean Motorway) connects the whole coastline from Alicante to Cartagena, passing through Torrevieja, Guardamar, Orihuela Costa, Pilar de la Horadada and San Pedro del Pinatar.
  • The N-332, a free road running parallel to the sea, is perfect for visiting coastal towns while enjoying the scenery.

Car rentals:
At airports, bus stations and cities like Alicante, Torrevieja or Murcia, you’ll find plenty of rental options at competitive prices, especially when booking early. Companies like Goldcar, Europcar or Centauro operate all year round.

Munfort tip: If you plan to live between two areas (for example, Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada), having your own car or a shared car makes daily life much easier, especially for shopping, beach visits or travelling to golf courses and shopping centres like La Zenia Boulevard.

Public Transport: Affordable and Practical

If you prefer not to drive, public transport is also an excellent option.

Intercity buses:

  • Companies such as Costa Azul, ALSA or LATBUS offer frequent routes between Alicante, Torrevieja, Murcia and Cartagena.
  • There are daily services from towns such as Pilar de la Horadada, San Javier or Los Alcázares to major cities and airports.
  • Tickets can be purchased online or directly from the driver.

Urban buses:
In towns like Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa or Cartagena, local buses connect neighbourhoods, shopping centres, beaches and hospitals.
They are inexpensive (€1–€2 per journey) and ideal for short distances.

Trains: Quick Connections with the Rest of Spain

If you enjoy travelling, the rail network connects you easily with the rest of the country.

Main stations:

  • Alicante-Terminal: high-speed AVE and ALVIA trains to Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.
  • Murcia del Carmen: also connected by AVE since 2023, ideal for those living in the Costa Cálida.

Commuter trains:

  • Line C-1 connects Alicante, Elche and Murcia with frequent services.
Perfect for residents who work or study in different cities within the region.

Airports: Year-Round International Connections

One of the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida’s greatest advantages is excellent air connectivity, with flights available throughout the year.

Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC):

  • Just 30–40 minutes from Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja.
  • Operated by airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet, Norwegian and Iberia.
  • Connections to major European destinations, especially the UK, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands and Germany.

Region of Murcia International Airport (RMU):

  • About 25 minutes from Los Alcázares or Pilar de la Horadada.
  • Ideal for residents of the Costa Cálida.
  • Frequent routes to the UK and northern Europe.

Bicycles and Sustainable Mobility

More and more towns are becoming committed to green mobility.

  • Bike lanes: Torrevieja, Guardamar, San Pedro del Pinatar and Cartagena offer cycling routes along seafronts and natural areas.
  • Bike and e-scooter rental: available in tourist zones and residential developments.

Advantage: it’s eco-friendly, healthy and a fun way to enjoy the Mediterranean climate.

Taxis and Transport Apps

Nearly all towns offer a local taxi service, with regulated fares and 24-hour availability.
Apps such as Bolt, FreeNow and local VTC services are also available, ideal for airport transfers or occasional trips.

Moving Around Is as Easy as Enjoying Life Here

Living on the Costa Blanca or the Costa Cálida means convenience and freedom. Whether by car, bus, train or bike, the region’s transport options are designed to help you enjoy your surroundings stress-free.
